Back in the day, my Dad was a big time deer hunter who tracked his prey, so I have some faint memories of bow hunting, but I am no expert on the subject. However, I do enjoy spending time in the woods, and I do have a bow hunting ladder stand for my bow.

If you’re looking for a light weight, sturdy, and highly portable, check out the Protech Huntress single-handed bow drag hunting ladder stand that is rated by many as the best bow hunting ladder stand available today.

If you’re looking for a 2-handed bow hunting ladder stand, you should check out the Winchester Mad Dog Pro XL 2-Hand Bow Hunting Ladder Stand. It’s got some really cool features including a rugged, powder-coated, all-metal frame, an anti-rattle removable window, and an anti-freeze deer scent wick.

  • One of the cheapest options available
  • Lightweight
  • Powerlock System
  • Integrated safety harness

  • No railings
  • Not the best stability

The Summit Steepladder is one of the most basic and lightweight ladder stands on the market. It’s the perfect hunting equipment for anyone who usually hunts in steep terrain, such as mountain hunters, forest hunters, or just hunters who like to climb tall trees.

It’s so light that you can carry it by yourself. It weighs only 50 lbs. Still, you’ll have to be careful when moving it around. The Summit treestands come with power lock that enables the user to safely attach the stand to the tree. This powerlock feature comes with a foot lock that ensures that the stand won’t accidentally come down.

The Steepladder also comes with a safety harness which should be used anytime you climb up into any tree. Since accidents happen, it’s better to take precautions to stay safe. One more thing we like about this product is that it’s very affordable. You get everything you need from a treestand, but for a fraction of the price.

  • Heavy-duty frame
  • A metal seat
  • Consists of a ladder and a stand
  • Has swivel technology
  • The stand has a heavy-duty frame
  • It sets up easily in a snap
  • The harness is easily adjusted.
  • The frame stands up very strong
  • Can be transported easily
  • The seat material is soft and comfortable

  • It is huge, heavy and bulky.
  • Takes up a lot of space when in a truck.
  • Sometimes the ladder shakes, even with the floor stabilizers in place.
  • The seat is not very comfortable, even though it is soft and padded.
  • This one is not for smaller people

This is a great stand for a tall person. It is large and sturdy. A shorter person may feel that they are in a tree house. Great for a bow hunter, not so good for gun. This is probably not the right choice for a beginner. It appears to be less expensive than the Muddy.

  • Perfect for tree stand hunting
  • Load limit of 350 lbs
  • Great reviews

  • Pricier than many competitors
  • Dimensions are smaller than some competitors

If you want to step up your game in tree stand hunting, I recommend the Big Dog BDL-1050. It has a max weight capacity of 350 lbs and has a climbing angle of 28 degrees.

I could see this being a little more comfortable than those traditional ladder stands due to the increased angle that it has. It is also safer by being further from the trunk since you are further from the trunk. It'll even convert to lean-to mode if that's what you want to do.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best bow hunting ladder stand?

Bow hunting ladder stands are a wonderful tool for both bow hunters and firearm hunters. These are simple easy to set up stands that minimize the distance from your shooting position to your target without giving you the limited range of a tree stand.

A ladder stand can also be used to reach the upper hanging game that a tree stand wouldn’t normally allow. The high shooting port and precision movements can often put you where you want to be in those places where you’re too tall to comfortably shoot. They also tend to be less costly, leaving your budget more money to purchase arrows, a bow, or even a new bow and an extensive hunting bag. Whatever you choose, just ensure that you have the best bowhunting ladder stand for your needs.

Are ladder stands good for bow hunting?

They are exceptional at hunting deer. Ladder stands are especially good on the wary ones that have been fired upon before. They love to sit tight in heavy cover to escape the cold and wind. If a deer has previously been harassed by rifle fire, then that deer will likely freeze tight between the trees and present a very slight profile. Ladder stands put yourself above that spot and the buck can’t see you. On the other hand, a ground blind just ends up making a nice bedding spot, unless your blind is extremely well concealed.

Ladder stands are great because for the most part they can be installed (even if it involves a bit of climbing) long before bow season. They can be up and ready to fire as soon as the tree leaves open up and allow for a good view.

What is the best ladder tree stand?

A ladder tree stand is one designed for the more agile hunter who likes the idea of being in the branches but prefers a bit more flexibility and rough terrain handling than a typical fixed tree stand offers. What does this mean?

It means these stands are slightly heavier than fixed stands, not as easily transported, and they're trickier to set up. However, once you’re up the ladder, and safely seated in your stand, the experience can arguably be safer and more enjoyable than sitting off a set of fixed steps. They give hunters a greater sense of flexibility and freedom of movement. An added bonus: the greater weight of the ladder stand also means they are good for heavier individuals, like myself.

Are ladder stands safe?

Ladder stands aren't recommended if heights make you nervous. However, if you are okay with climbing up and down the ladder, they are relatively safe. However, they can be dangerous and even deadly if used incorrectly, so be sure to take adequate safety precautions.

First, never set your stand up on unstable ground. You need to find a sturdy place where your stand can't knock over and where the ground will support your weight 100% of the time. The last thing you want is for the ground to give way under you because you're too heavy or you have hit a weak spot in the soil.

Never enter a ladder stand unless it has a good solid platform to support your weight. Never set up a ladder stand without using steps to climb up it. Never use a ladder stand that is wobbly, cracked, or unstable.

If you prefer bow hunting over rifle hunting, you need to know your way around a proper ladder hunting stand. If you don’t, you are leaving a lot on the table and you might as well be going down to the store and getting your deer meat in cans. Ladder stands provide you with a way to get completely off the ground and out of sight, increasing your chances of filling your tag.
